WNBA’s A’ja Wilson signs six-year contract extension with Nike

A’ja Wilson, one of the most iconic modern WNBA players, signed a new deal with Nike reported to be one of its most valuable deals with a women’s basketball player ever.

A few months after naming her its newest signature athlete, Nike signed a six-year contract extension with Las Vegas Aces player A’ja Wilson. According to ESPN, the deal is now one of Nike’s most valuable for a women’s basketball player, though no specific dollar amount was reported.

The first overall draft pick in the 2018 WNBA draft and MVP of the 2023 WNBA finals, Wilson has been a trailblazer for a new generation of women’s basketball stars. With a release date set for sometime in 2025, Wilson’s signature shoe will be versatile for on-court play and off-court style, according to Nike.

Wilson is also part of Nike’s Athlete Think Tank, which was founded in 2022 and brings several female athletes from around the world to Nike’s world headquarters every year to brainstorm ways to advance women’s sports through innovative products.

Footwear and apparel companies are betting big on women’s sports, particularly after record-breaking WNBA, NWSL and NCAA seasons in 2024.

Candace Parker, a three-time WNBA champion, is the new head of women’s basketball at Adidas, and Nike also recently signed Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark to a reported eight-year, $28 million deal, which also includes a signature shoe.
