Former five-star LSU QB Walker Howard may transfer back

Former five-star LSU QB Walker Howard may transfer back to Louisiana

Walker Howard was one of the top quarterback recruits in LSU history when he signed in 2022. He transferred to Ole Miss after one season with the Tigers, but now two years later, heโ€™s back in the portal.

A home-state return may be in the fold for Howard with Louisiana emerging as a top contender for the signal caller.

Louisiana is coming off a 10-win season where the Ragin Cajuns fell short in the Sun Belt championship.

The offense was one of the best in the conference, but UL may need a quarterback entering 2024. If so, Howard makes sense.

Out of St. Thomas Moore High School, Howard is a Lafayette native. And according to On3 predictions, Louisiana is an early favorite to land Howardโ€™s services.

Howard will be entering his fourth year of college football, but it didnโ€™t work out at LSU or Ole Miss. At LSU, Howard was stuck behind Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier. At Ole Miss, Howard was behind star QB Jaxson Dart and then lost the backup role to the young Austin Simmons.

Louisiana can give the talented quarterback a fresh start in a familiar city.

In three seasons, Howard has appeared in six games, attempting just 10 passes for 63 yards.

Ranking the 12 best players on LSU football’s 2024 roster

Brian Kelly is gearing up for his third year at LSU. LSUโ€™s had plenty of star power his first two years in Baton Rouge. It culminated last year with Jayden Daniels winning a Heisman as Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. became two of the most productive receivers in LSU history.

With those three gone, there are some unknowns, especially at the skills positions. Last year when I did this list, I was able to rank 26 players. This year, itโ€™s a little different. The roster is chock-full of talent, but thereโ€™s less separation from player to player.

But the Tigers are returning a handful of big names headlined by some of the best offensive linemen in the country.

On defense, LSUโ€™s looking for a few stars to emerge, but new defensive coordinator Blake Baker has some strong candidates to work with.

Here are the 12 best players on LSUโ€™s roster entering 2024.

Womack was a five-star recruit in 2023 with On3 and 247Sports ranking him as the third-best edge in the class.

He saw limited time, playing just 79 defensive snaps. Only 52 of those were pass-rush snaps. But he made the most of it, racking up eight pressures. That ranked second among SEC edge defenders with less than 60 pass rush snaps.

Last fall, Brian Kelly said Womack would eventually make an impact but wasnโ€™t ready for a full-time role. The rest of this list is filled with players who have a proven track record of contributing. With Womack, Iโ€™m betting on a breakout. But LSU needs some stars to emerge on defense and the former-five star is a name to watch.
